Spring Hydrant Flushing Notice
Star Sewer & Water District maintains more than 1,400 fire hydrants throughout the District to provide reliable fire protection for homes and businesses. Keeping each hydrant in proper working condition requires routine maintenance.
Each spring, the District performs hydrant flushing, a preventative maintenance process that:
- Verifies adequate water flow for fire protection
- Removes naturally occurring sediment from water mains
- Helps maintain high water quality standards
During flushing, customers near the work area may experience temporary water discoloration or minor pressure fluctuations.
In some cases, residents outside the immediate flushing area may also notice rust-colored water. This can occur because opening a hydrant may temporarily change the direction of water flow. District staff use proven techniques to minimize these impacts.
Flushing Schedule
Beginning: Monday, March 9, 2026
Hours of Operation:
- Monday – Thursday: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Daily flushing locations will be posted on the District website at www.starswd.com under the News & Updates tab by 4:30 p.m. the day prior.
Please note: Schedules may change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.
What to Expect
- Temporary red, brown, or blackish water
- Brief changes in water pressure
These conditions are temporary and will resolve after flushing is complete.
Helpful Tips
- Try to limit water use while flushing is occurring in your area.
- If water appears discolored, run cold water (preferably from a bathtub or outside spigot) at full flow until it clears.
- Always use cold water to clear your lines to prevent sediment from entering your hot water heater.
- Avoid washing white or light-colored laundry during periods of discoloration.
- If laundry becomes stained, do not dry it. Rust remover is available free of charge at the District office.
- If faucets run slowly, remove and rinse faucet screens (aerators).
- Pressure fluctuations are temporary and will return to normal.
While we cannot provide an exact time when flushing will conclude in your specific area, you may wish to flush your household lines after 3:00 p.m. if needed.
Signs will be posted in neighborhoods when flushing is underway. A tentative schedule is attached.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as our crews perform this important maintenance to ensure reliable fire protection and high-quality water service for our community.
